Parents on their way to pick their children up Friday at Hornung Elementary School and Maltby Middle School had reason to panic.
An unidentified caller told police there was a person with a gun near the schools, off Bauer Road in Brighton. Law enforcement showed up in full force with units from Brighton Police, the Livingston County Sheriff's Office and Michigan State Police filling the area.
That call ended up being false, made by a 10-year-old student previously suspended for bringing a knife to school.
Police plan to request the child be charged with making a false report or threat of terrorism, a felony, MSP said in a tweet after the incident.
"Both Hornung and Maltby went into lockdown," Matt Outlaw, Brighton Area Schools Superintendent said in an email of the issues the incident caused. "The challenge was that it happened at student release. Administration, teachers and support staff took precautionary measures until they received the 'all clear' from the police department."
Friday's call was just one of many law enforcement has received in the past several weeks, according to an MSP spokesman.
"In the last couple of weeks law enforcement agencies have seen an increase in false reports of terrorism to schools," MSP Lt. Brian Oleksyk said. "These types of false reports will be investigated thoroughly by law enforcement agencies and sent to a prosecutor for review of charges."
