Police officer who won $2.1M whistleblower case sues N.J. town again - NJ.com

A Teaneck police officer who won a $2.1 million whistleblower verdict last year has filed a new lawsuit, claiming the township suspended him days before he was set to testify against police officials.

Glenn Coley, 59, claims he “was gearing up for the trial of his life” when he was suspended without pay based on excessive force allegations “that were sheer fabrications.”

The suspension was an act of retaliation meant to jeopardize Coley’s career and cast him in a negative light ahead of his testimony, according to the suit, filed Monday in Superior Court of Bergen County.

Coley “was humiliated, emotionally harmed, and devastated by this unlawful act,” the suit alleges.

Specifically, Coley was accused of perjury during an internal affairs investigation launched after an arrestee assaulted him in the police station, according to the complaint.

Internal affairs investigators interviewed Coley twice about the incident to look for inconsistencies in his story. The complaint alleges investigators did this so they could file charges against him in retaliation for his filing the first lawsuit.

Teaneck officials declined to comment on the allegations on Thursday.

Coley filed the first whistleblower lawsuit against the Teaneck Police Department in 2022, alleging his career was derailed after he gave sworn testimony supporting a township resident’s account that she had been the victim of excessive force.
