Port Huron City Manager James Freed sent a letter to the city council Thursday, July 2, asking them not to validate false claims against him after his family was threatened.
"Public officials should always be subject to questions, accountability, and scrutiny," Freed wrote in his letter. "I fully accept that as part of this role. However, there is a significant difference between legitimate oversight and the repeated amplification of false claims that have no basis in fact. When accusations of corruption or unethical behavior are allowed to circulate without correction, or worse, are affirmed through private meetings, public comments, or silence, those false narratives gain strength."
The letter was sent after Freed filed a personal protection order against Julian Ruck, the former owner of Polly's Place garden.
The order, dated June 11, states Ruck made several unwanted, harassing threats against Freed, who said some of those threats were directed toward his wife and young children. The order signed off by Judge Daniel Damman stated the statements were "well-beyond protected speech."
