Primary elections live updates: Georgia, Alabama, Arkansas primaries; Texas runoff news - The Washington Post

BREAKING NEWS: Georgia Rep. Lucy McBath (D) has defeated Rep. Carolyn Bourdeaux (D) in the redrawn 7th Congressional District. The two Democrats were drawn into the same district in the metro Atlanta area during the redistricting process. More area from Boudreaux’s old seat was included in the new district than from McBath’s, and she had the backing of former senator Sam Nunn (D). But McBath had the backing of the Congressional Black Caucus campaign arm and is nationally known for her leadership on gun control. McBath is now expected to be a favorite heading into November.

Today, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is projected to win the GOP runoff, defeating George P. Bush, per the Associated Press. Paxton, who is seeking a third term, had the backing of former president Donald Trump in his race against Bush, the grandson and nephew of presidents and the son of former Florida governor Jeb Bush. Paxton won despite being under state felony indictment since 2015 and a separate investigation by the FBI over allegations of corruption. He will be favored in the fall in a state Trump won by about five points in 2020.

In Georgia, Gov. Brian Kemp won the GOP primary, handily defeating former senator David Perdue (R) who was recruited and backed by former president Donald Trump, still furious over Kemp’s unwillingness to overturn Joe Biden’s 2020 victory in the state. Kemp faces a November rematch against Stacey Abrams, whom he edged out in 2018.
