Professor wins $10M in TikTok defamation case - seattlered.com

A Texas woman who used TikTok to falsely accuse a University of Idaho professor of murder must now pay $10 million.

An Idaho jury handed down the verdict on February 27 following a three-day defamation trial. The case centered on Ashley Guillard, a self-described “internet sleuth” and psychic, who spent months claiming that Professor Rebecca Scofield orchestrated the 2022 killings of four students.

The false accusations

According to KING 5, Guillard told her millions of viewers that Professor Scofield was involved in a secret relationship with one of the victims and ordered the murders to keep it quiet. She continued posting these claims even after the real killer, Bryan Kohberger, was caught.

Kohberger admitted to the murders in July 2025 and is currently serving a life sentence.

A federal judge previously called these claims “outrageous” and “baseless” before the jury finalized the payout to compensate for the damage done to Scofield’s reputation and mental health.
