Rep. Axne Leads Bipartisan Letter Asking FTC to Look Into Misleading Advertisements Selling Supplements to Children - Cindy Axne

Axne’s letter questions how the Federal Trade Commission can crack down on advertisements of diet pills and supplements that are aimed at children and teens

Today, Rep. Cindy Axne (IA-03) led a bipartisan letter to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to request more information about how they will prevent deceptive advertisements aimed at children and teenagers.

This letter was sent during Eating Disorder Awareness Month and requests answers on how children can be better protected from deceptive advertising tactics.

“This issue impacts our children across Iowa. Data collected by the University of Iowa show an increase in the number of girls – some as young as 13 – seeking assistance and support for recovery from an eating disorder,” said Rep. Axne. “As a mom, I know that our children are getting bombarded with ads and images telling them they need to lose weight, gain muscle, or otherwise change their bodies – when those ads are really just trying to sell them a pill or tea or shake that doesn’t work and could even be harmful to their health.”

Dietary supplements targeting weight loss or muscle building have been using misleading and deceptive advertising on social media. The FTC is responsible for ensuring that marketing of these products is accurate. In 2020, the FTC ruled that TEMI would have to pay $1 million fine for false claims on weight loss products.
