Rep. Buck introduces bill to extend protections against false claims for government to consumers - Greeley Tribune

U.S. Rep. Ken Buck and producers including Molson Coors hope to expand existing legal protections against misleading fees for the government to consumers.

Buck on Jan. 25 introduced the False Claims Enhancement Act, which would penalize production companies that charge such fees that the companies say are to collect money they claim is owed to the federal government, according to a news release from Buck’s office.

“Users of aluminum in Colorado are being deceptively overcharged by producers under the guise of government fees,” Buck said in the release. “The False Claims Enhancement Act would put an end to this dishonest practice and ensure that production companies are penalized for lying about the necessity and use of fees.”

Buck partnered with producers in his district, which stretches across much of the Eastern Plains and includes Windsor, Loveland and rural areas of Weld County, to create the legislation. Molson Coors President and CEO Gavin Hattersley said the act is “a common-sense proposal that will provide much-needed transparency in aluminum pricing.”

“Aluminum is the single largest commodity cost across the beer industry, making it imperative to have fair and open price discovery processes for buys and sellers alike,” Hattersley said.
