CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - Following a lawsuit raising questions about just where Lowcountry restaurants are getting their shrimp, area restaurant owners are pushing back.
Hyman’s Seafood owner-operator Tobias Hyman goes through thousands of pounds of shrimp a year.
He says they never mislead customers about where that shrimp comes from.
“If anyone ever comes into Hyman’s Seafood and they’re asking what is domestic or what is imported, we are always 100% honest and transparent about everything,” Hyman says.
The business was recently named, along with 24 others, in a lawsuit filed by the South Carolina Shrimpers Association, accusing them of falsely advertising their shrimp as a local product.
“At no point in time has Hyman’s Seafood knowingly advertised that we had local shrimp when in fact we did not,” Hyman said. “At times, we have carried domestic shrimp.”
However, Hyman acknowledges and takes responsibility for social media posts that may have suggested the shrimp they’re selling are local.
“What this boils down to for our business specifically is a miscommunication between us and our social media manager due to the shrimp season at certain times of the year. He had thought that we were carrying local shrimp when in fact we were not,” Hyman said. “We were not made aware of those posts as they were being posted. And now that we are aware of those posts, obviously we have removed them.”
