A Royal Navy investigation into misogyny aboard Britain’s nuclear submarines has been thrown into disarray after the main whistleblower withdrew her support for the inquiry.
Sophie Brook, 31, accused the navy of trying to “scapegoat” one senior officer in order to preserve the reputation of the Submarine Service as she questioned the delays facing the investigation.
The inquiry began last autumn after Brook came forward with details of obscene behaviour aboard the Vanguard-class of submarines, which carry Britain’s nuclear warheads. Other women subsequently went public with their own stories of abuse.
Male submariners compiled a “crush depth rape list”, which ranked women by those they would rape first if the submarine suffered a catastrophic failure. Brook also accused the former commander of a Trident submarine
