Russian Disinformation on Kherson: False Claims and Propaganda Analysis - Букви

The start of autumn has brought a number of Russian fakes and disinformation about Kherson and Kherson region. Kremlin propagandists claimed that their troops would soon take the regional capital, tried to discredit the Ukrainian Armed Forces, and appealed to supernatural forces. Below is an overview of the most common messages from the first half of September and which of them are purely disinformation.

Kherson “in 15 minutes”

At the start of the month, a Russian military officer with the call sign “Vorobey” told pro-Russian media that the army would be able to “take” Kherson in 15 minutes. According to the interlocutor, this would be possible if an order to advance were given, but Ukrainians allegedly had to hold for only 5–15 minutes in the event of an attack.

Other Russian publications from last week claimed that “Kherson is lost for Ukraine,” arguing this by allegedly full control of the city and the roads by drones. However, focusing on these narratives does not reflect the real battlefield situation.

The intelligence officer “Vorobey” spoke to Russian journalists about the “15 minutes” in a speech, but analysts state: on the right bank of the Dnipro the situation remains difficult for the occupiers, and their losses are rising.
