Post Davos, Russian Influence Operation Uses Phony Videos Impersonating Reuters, Gallup and the Economist to Foment EU Discord

What’s happened: A Russian influence operation that impersonates credible news outlets and other organizations sought to undermine the European Union during the World Economic Forum, spreading fabricated videos claiming that EU members were questioning their commitment to the union. These videos were falsely attributed to Reuters, the Economist and Gallup.

NewsGuard identified 10 videos apparently originating from the Russian Matryoshka campaign that emerged during the four-day World Economic Forum in Davos that were seemingly aimed at undermining European solidarity. The videos targeted both the EU’s support for Ukraine and its opposition to President Donald Trump’s threats to annex Greenland.

Context: From Jan. 19 to Jan. 23, heads of state, central bankers, and top CEOs gathered in Davos, Switzerland, for an annual conclave to discuss geopolitical tensions, the impact of AI, and global economic growth, among other topics.
