Families of the children killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School have responded in court to Alex Jones’ continued attempts to stave off the sale of his media empire.
Earlier this week, Jones asked a Texas appeals court to halt a deal to allow satirical news outlet the Onion to license the rights and intellectual property associated with Infowars and its parent company, Free Speech Systems. He argued in court documents that a district court erred in assigning a receiver to sell off Free Speech Systems and that it was subject to a stay in his bankruptcy case. He also argued that the licensee, Onion owner Global Tetrahedron LLC, would destroy the assets.
Global Tetrahedron struck a deal with the court-assigned receiver to license Infowars' intellectual property, trademarks and domain for $81,000 a month for six months, at which time it hopes to buy the property outright.
In Wednesday afternoon filings, attorneys for the families said the state district court was on the correct path, and that Jones was fabricating claims to avoid paying the court-ordered $1.4 billion he owes families in defamation damages.
“Alex Jones spent years getting rewarded for telling lies to the public. He should not be rewarded for telling them to a court of law. The Motion should be denied,” reads the court filing.
