The Saskatchewan government has announced changes to The Saskatchewan Employment Act to “improve health and safety and better meet the needs of modern workplaces in the province.”
The announcement this week comes after the province last year solicited feedback from stakeholders, including individuals, employers, labour unions or safety associations, for a review of the occupational health and safety provisions of the employment act.
One such stakeholder who submitted feedback in October 2021 was Sean Tucker, a professor of occupational health and safety at the University of Regina.
“I think overall, they’ve addressed concerns that we have about violence in the workplace, some stronger language around that,” Tucker said Friday.
Those changes include clarifying the definition of a worker to include secondary and post-secondary students, requiring workplaces to have a violence policy and carry out investigations of violence and harassment in the workplace, clarifying the authority of occupational health and safety officers to take photos and recordings during a workplace investigation and authorize officers to exclude nominees from investigation interviews, as well as general housekeeping measures for legislation.
“These are good things,” Tucker added, highlighting language which strengthen protections for workers who refuse to work in unsafe conditions.
