Saskatchewan updates employment laws to support workers and businesses - WestCentralOnline

The Saskatchewan government has approved a series of changes to The Saskatchewan Employment Act, aiming to modernize the province’s labour laws in ways that support both employers and workers.

The amendments, which will take effect later this fiscal year, are designed to promote a fair and flexible workplace environment while maintaining strong employee protections. Deputy Premier and Minister of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety Jim Reiter emphasized the government’s goal of striking a balance between economic growth and workers’ rights.

“Our labour legislation supports a growing economy and protects the rights of employees,” Reiter said. “We are committed to delivering a fair and balanced working environment through modern legislation to attract investment and ensure Saskatchewan continues to be a great place to work.”

Key changes to the legislation include:

  • A new method for calculating work time: Employers and employees will now be able to use a calendar day rather than 24 consecutive hours for work schedules and overtime provisions.
  • Protection of employee tips: Employers will be prohibited from withholding tips from their staff.
  • Revised group termination rules: The threshold for notifying employees, unions, and the minister of a group termination will increase from 10 employees to 25.
  • Limits on sick note requests: Employers will face new restrictions on when they can ask employees for a doctor's note.
