PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (CBS12) — Police are warning Port St. Lucie residents of a new scam that's made its way to the Treasure Coast.
The Port St. Lucie Police Department (PSLPD) said there are reports of anew Bitcoin scam where the victim is contacted through email by a scammer who claims there's evidencethat the victim has visited adult content websites.
PSLPD said the scammer goes into detail "explaining" the situation. Police said the scammer would claimthat the adult website had malware installed on it and it enabled the suspect to access the victim’s cellphone camera and record audio and video of the victim.
According to PSLPD, the scammer will tell the victim they have access to their cellphone information including contacts, emails, and social media accounts. Additionally, police said the scammer will provide the victim with their home address and cellphone number, including a photo of their home. Police said this information is accessible through public information searches, and residents should be aware of this scam.

Police said the scammer will demand thousands of dollars in Bitcoin as a form of payment, or the scammers will threaten to releasethe alleged incriminating evidence of the victim with their contacts.
