Shasta County in-home care providers' union applauds tentative contract - Redding Record Searchlight

The union representing IHSS employees who provide in-home care for people who are elderly or disabled say they've reached a tentative new contract with Shasta County.

Shasta County's 2,700 home care workers will receive an hourly increase of 50 cents per hour over the next two years under the tentative agreement reached on Wednesday.

Under the union’s current contract negotiated in 2017, IHSS workers are being paid 60 cents above minimum wage, or $14.60. As of Jan. 1, when a new state minimum wage law goes into effect, the amount would rise to $15.60.

The proposed wage increase would raise salaries to $16.10 is the contact is ratified as expected early next year to $16.60 per hour in January 2023, according to union bargaining team member Madalynn Clark.

There is no county increase slated for 2024, the final year of the proposed three-year contract.

The proposal calls for the union to also receive $10,000 a year for member training, which would include certified training in CPR, first aid, mental illness awareness and Alzheimer's care.

"A lot of people are doing this for their family and have no training," said Clark. "It's important that we have that so that they can give the best quality of care that our recipients can get."

"Unlimited" personal protective equipment including masks, gowns and gloves, will also be supplied to the union's in-home caregivers, said union bargaining team member Madalynn Clark.
