Sherrill nominates Jarvis as New Jersey labor commissioner - NJBIZ

Gov. Mikie Sherrill nominated Kevin Jarvis to serve as the next commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Labor & Workforce Development. He would succeed longtime Commissioner Robert Asaro-Angelo.

If confirmed for the role, Jarvis will oversee:

  • Workforce training and development initiatives
  • Higher education and business partnerships and pathways
  • Improvements to government service delivery
  • Expanded career opportunities for individuals with disabilities

Jarvis brings a mix of legal, policy and executive experience. Most recently, he served as a partner at the law firm O’Brien, Belland & Bushinsky. There, he practiced labor law, handling contract negotiations, grievances and arbitration, unfair labor practice cases and ERISA litigation.

Department experience

Additionally, he previously served nearly four years as chief of staff at the labor department – the agency he is now poised to lead.

Sherrill cited Jarvis’s long-standing advocacy for workers’ rights as well as his familiarity with the NJDOL.
