Since moving to Harrison from the Maryland oceanside, where he lived most of his life, Henry Gamb has decorated his lakeshore home on Hamilton Island Drive into an aquatic museum of sorts with paintings, outdoor sculptures and even life-size pirates he brought to Chattanooga from his days spent on the Atlantic Ocean as a merchant marine captain.
Along with displaying his love of the sea, Gamb also was eager to make his Harrison home more energy efficient and reliable. So, when a sales representative from Solar Titan in Knoxville called last year to pitch him on the idea of putting solar panels on his roof, Gamb said he soon became convinced that such an investment would save him money over time and make it less likely he would be left in the dark.
"With all of the craziness of blackouts in California and other areas, it seemed to make a lot of sense to install these solar panels and batteries to make our home more self-reliant and, hopefully, save money over time," Gamb said.
When a Solar Titan salesperson suggested he could reduce his annual power bills by $3,600 or more, Gamb agreed to a $61,500 solar and battery installation that was supposed to supply most of the power to his home and sell surplus power back to TVA.
The solar panels were installed on his home, but they never worked out right, he said. In fact, until the system was adjusted by another contractor in recent months, the installation by Solar Titan didn't reduce any of Gamb's power bills.
