Singapore orders Meta, X to correct ‘false’ claims by US comic Sammy Obeid over show cancellations - Malay Mail

SINGAPORE, Sept 4 — Singapore’s Ministry for Digital Development and Information (MDDI) has reportedly instructed Meta and X to issue correction notices to users who accessed posts by US-based comedian Sammy Obeid, after he failed to comply with a direction under the city-state’s fake news law.

The ministry said the order was made under the Protection from Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Act (Pofma), after Obeid ignored a correction direction issued on September 1, The Straits Times reported.

In his August 27 posts, the Lebanese-Palestinian American performer reportedly alleged that two of his stand-up shows in Singapore were cancelled due to government censorship.

He reportedly further claimed that the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) made him remove all references to Israel, Palestine and Gaza, but rejected his Arts Entertainment Licence application even after he complied.

The government reportedly rejected these assertions, saying IMDA did not demand such edits and had not turned down his application over concerns he might go off-script.

As Obeid reportedly did not append the correction notices, MDDI said Meta and X will now issue them directly to ensure Singapore users see the government’s clarification.
