The Spanish government has adapted the immigration law to include migrant workers in the labour market.
The European Commission said in one of its most recent press releases that the reform of the Regulation on foreigners to streamline procedures and incorporate workers into Spain’s labour market came into force on August 15, 2022, 20 days after it was announced in the official state gazette.
According to the Spanish Minister of Inclusion, Social Security, and Migration, José Luis Escrivá, the country aims to modernise the migration model in order to encourage regular and safe migration, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.
The Commission explains that this reform allows those who have lived in Spain for two years to regularise their situation if they are skilled or trained to be employed in sectors that are in need of workers.
This means that the process for granting work permits will now be more flexible, making it easier for foreigners to remain as well as work in Spain.
“The royal decree that enabled this reform to come into force makes the processes for granting work permits more flexible, which will affect both immigrants who are in Spain in an irregular situation and people who can be hired in their country of origin,” the statement of the Commission reads.
In order to facilitate the incorporation into the labour market of migrants that live in Spain, the conditions to obtain a permit for employment, family reunification, and other social reasons have been updated.
