ST. GEORGE — No serious injuries or significant property damage were reported after a shop fire in the Industrial Park part of St. George Wednesday afternoon.
St. George Fire Department Chief Robert Stoker told St. George News the 911 call went out at approximately at 3:30 p.m. from Ruesch Machine, 916 N Red Rock Road.
He went on to explain that company employees operate a large stove in the middle of its shop area in which they burn wood and used oil for heat.
“They were reloading the used oil in the tank that supplies it into the stove, at which time some oil was spilled,” Stoker said. “Then it caught on fire.”
Stoker added that the employees at Ruesch Machine called 911 and attempted to douse the fire out with extinguishers on hand.
“They did control the fire,” Stoker said. “When we arrived they did have smoke showing from the building. We sent crews in and were able to cool it down and smother that oil fire out.”
Stoker said there was minor damage to toolboxes and other equipment around the stove area.
“So they were able to keep utilities and power and those things on,” Stoker added. “We’ll be able to get back in business as soon as we get the oil and the area cleaned up.”
Reusch Machine is a concrete pumping equipment company and crane rental service. A handful of employees was outside the building, catching a breath of fresh air while fire department personnel hovered about.
