Staffing ‘crisis’ has sheriff, prosecutor in Muskegon vying for marijuana tax revenues - MLive.com

MUSKEGON COUNTY, MI – The sheriff and prosecutor in Muskegon County are vying for marijuana tax revenues to address what both say are critical law enforcement staffing issues in their offices.

Sheriff Michael Poulin’s request for six additional correctional officers would more than use all of the approximately $677,500 in taxes the county receives from the sale of recreational marijuana.

“We are in a critical time right now with staffing levels at the sheriff’s office,” Poulin recently told county commissioners who were meeting as the courts and public safety committee.

At the same meeting, Prosecutor D.J. Hilson told commissioners that increased competition from inside and outside the county for an insufficient pool of legal experts has placed his office in an employment “crisis mode.”

Hilson is seeking two additional staff members, including a digital media specialist to process police body cam evidence, and salary increases for other staff members in his request for $445,0000 of the marijuana revenues.

Commissioners, not wishing at the time to decide which request was more critical, suggested the sheriff and prosecutor attempt to hammer out a compromise on their staffing needs. Either that, or commissioners said they will schedule a work session to hear more about the needs.
