Starbucks workers hope to become the first Sacramento-area stores to unionize - KCRA Sacramento

SACRAMENTO, Calif. —

More than 20 Starbucks employees from two different Sacramento locations are seeking to unionize amid safety concerns dating back to August 2022.

Both of the locations seeking to join Starbucks Workers United are the shops on 19th and J streets in midtown and the 7th and K streets spot in downtown.

Nick Medeiros, a supervisor at the downtown street location said that the petition came after multiple times when employees were harassed or even assaulted by customers. One of those assaults happened to one of the supervisors at the downtown location two days ago.

"Our primary thing is that we want on-site security. We have asked corporate for this in the past and they have refused. They are relying on the supervisors to handle these issues. We're not trained that way," Medeiros said.

In letters written to Starbucks Interim CEO Howard Schultz, workers at 7th & K explained that they "believe that profit and customer gratification have taken over as top priority," and gave examples of behaviors that have made them feel unsafe such as:

  • Harassment, staring, and vulgarities
  • Violent and disruptive behavior
  • Severe misuse of restrooms (ie. drugs, sex, dirty clothing, sexual assault, etc.)
  • Loitering in the cafe (ie. digging through trash, leaving trash bags and belongings scattered, drug use, harassing customers)

Medeiros said that these examples combined with not having enough workers have forced them to modify their operations.
