South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster, along with state and local police, are speaking out about a recent, widespread school shooting hoax while studying our law enforcement response to better cope with the growing problem.
Officials believe that last week’s incidents were sparked by a viral social media prank or a “TikTok challenge.” The incidents have local, state and federal agencies investigating, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, according to multiple reports.
On Friday, Gov. McMaster issued a statement, praising the statewide response and planning to do more, and Hampton County’s Sheriff-elect Anthony Russell also has the problem in his sights.

Police departments in South Carolina received a litany of calls about the presence of an active shooter in school districts across the state last Wednesday morning, Oct. 5.
At least 18 school districts, including those in Hampton, Greenville, Anderson, Charleston, Greenwood, Beaufort, Richland and Horry counties, reported hoax 911 calls. Several press statements referred to them as prank calls.
According to its Facebook page, the Hampton Police Department received a 911 call about an intruder or possible shooter at Hampton Elementary School around 2:15 p.m. that day.
Officers with the HPD, Hampton County Sheriff’s Office, and Varnville Police Department responded to the school and investigated.
