Suzzanne W. Decker is on the Miles & Stockbridge Coronavirus Task Force, a cross-disciplinary team deployed to tackle pandemic changes. A key issue for Decker has been tracking the growth of the virtual office, especially when businesses hire virtual employees in other states with different tax and labor laws.
“It can be a bit of a gray area,” she said of the legal risks facing employers. “At the end of the day, each
state is going to want an employee sitting in their state to receive the full benefit of their laws,”
Decker advises employers on employment law issues – avoiding litigation in employee hirings, terminations and medical leave administration and preventing sexual and other harassment in the workplace. She also defends employers in wage and hour issues, discrimination and harassment, and family medical leave, and assists companies with enforcing noncompetition agreements and breach of contract claims.
What’s the most important thing you do in your job?
I help clients solve problems related to their most valuable asset — their people.
What is one aspect of your profession you would like to change?
I would like to see more collaboration from the opposite side of the table to get to the right answers for clients.
If you weren’t in this industry, what would you be doing?
I wanted to be a lawyer since sixth grade. Before that, it was an airline pilot. I do love to travel, so it would still be a good choice.
