The IRS has just recently released an updated list of its priorities and what its goal going to be in the future. The IRS audit priorities are exactly what a tax whistleblower should be looking for so that it can catch the attention of the IRS.

After all, a tax whistleblower doesn’t only have to make a good submission but also has to get the IRS interested.

Priority Areas for IRS Examination

There are some points that the IRS cares more about than others. Mr. De Lon Harris who is the commissioner of examination for SB/SE in IRS recently revealed the ten areas which are of utmost importance for the IRS in an examination. These are:

  • Large pass-thru entities
  • High-net-worth / high income nonfilers
  • Global high wealth
  • Large pass-thru entities
  • Abusive transaction promoters
  • Large corporate compliance
  • Nonfiler virtual currency (cryptocurrency)
  • Employment tax
  • Transfer pricing
  • Bank Secrecy Act/Title 31
  • Abusive transaction promoters
  • Special enforcement program (which has a focus on illegal/legal unreported income)

The IRS has already hired 2000 new examiners at SB/SE. They might even hire 2000 more examiners. All of these examiners are going to be looking into old files and finding out about individuals and businesses who aren’t paying their taxes.
