SAN ANTONIO - The Bexar County Commissioners Court approved a pay raise for sheriff deputies in an effort to improve safety and security for you.
The pay raises come at a time when the Bexar County Sherriff's Office has been trying to fill a big deputy shortage.
The hope is that this latest pay increase will help recruitment and retention efforts to keep our community safe.
"There are many times that we have asked for police presence and two hours later you will get a message stating they are too busy to respond," said Joanne Hilliard, a long-time board member of Hills and Dales Neighborhood Association, a community outside of 1604, off Babcock Road.
She says she's relieved that the county is investing in recruiting more deputies.
"Public safety is the centerpiece of what we do; unincorporated Bexar County is growing rapidly," said Grant Moody, Precinct 3 Bexar County Commissioner.
Currently, Bexar County Sheriff Deputies earn less than other law enforcement officers in major metropolitan areas in Texas.
That's why the county's commitment to increasing salaries for patrols and detention officers will go a long way to making sure deputies do not go to surrounding counties for higher pay.
"This assures that we are not just competitive with agencies our size, more importantly, it keeps us competitive with agencies in this area," said Sheriff Javier Salazar.
The entry-level wage for a Bexar County Detention Officer is $17.42 an hour.
