Police responded to a call on the night of April 12 that Lacy had discharged a firearm in Houston and fled the scene, ESPN reported. After a official pursuit, Lacy was found dead from a gunshot wound inside his car. The athlete reportedly took his own life at the age of 24.

Leading up to his tragic suicide, Lacy faced criminal charges connected to a fatal car accident which killed a 78-year-old man in Louisiana. According to a statement from the Louisiana State Police Department (LSP), former marine Herman Hall died during a head on collision in December 2024. Lacy was the driver allegedly responsible for the accident.

“The driver of the Dodge, later identified as 24-year-old Kyren Lacy of Thibodaux, recklessly passed multiple vehicles at a high rate of speed by crossing the centerline and entering the northbound lane while in a designated No-Passing Zone,” the statement read.

Police added Lacy, who was driving southbound on the highway, illegally passed other vehicles. This led to a northbound pickup truck allegedly spotting Lacy and breaking abruptly. In turn, the driver behind the truck swerved into incoming traffic and hit the deceased’s vehicle.
