KOTA KINABALU: Three men were fined by the Special Corruption Court here for making RM882,560 in false claims for a community project in Keningau.
Two of them had abetted the offences.
Junaidi Juling, 33, Sainal Tamin, 47, and Mohd Rahmad Ambotou, 33, were each fined RM150,000, in default, 18 months' jail by Sessions Court judge Jason Juga.
Each accused pleaded guilty to three alternative charges. The judge fined them RM50,000, in default, six months' imprisonment for each charge.
In Junaidi's case, he had used forged receipts to claim transportation costs for the Keningau zone Community Drumming Project.
The claims – RM170,240, RM298,480, and RM413,840 – for September, October, and November 2019, respectively, were submitted to the Sabah Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry office in Keningau.
Rahmad and Sainal admitted to abetting Junaidi in submitting the forged documents at the same place and time.
In mitigation, counsel Faezahwaty Abby Mohd Ibnu who represented all the accused, requested a lower fine, saying that the three were first-time offenders and had dependents.
Malaysia Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) prosecutor Norsham Saharom called for an appropriate sentence as a lesson to them.
They paid the fines.
