Transport Malta whistleblower takes the witness stand via video link - Newsbook

The whistleblower in the driving licence corruption racket featuring Transport Malta officials started testifying in the criminal proceedings against three accused of corruption.

Earlier this week, the case against former Transport Malta director Clint Mansueto and two clerks: Raul Antonio Pace and Philip Edrick Zammit, resumed before a court presided over by magistrate Rachel Montebello.

The three are pleading not guilty to charges relating to corruption and bribery in relation to driving tests.

The whistleblower, who was referred to by independent MEP candidate Arnold Cassola by the pseudonym “Aziz”, eventually filed a court application through his lawyer Jason Azzopardi requesting to testify in the proceedings after the prosecution failed to summon him.

Aziz told the court that he had sent an email to the police in 2020 to inform them about the racket. That email had led to the investigation which then resulted in the trio’s arraignment.

The whistleblower had told the police that he was often engaged as an interpreter to assist the non-English speaking candidates in their theory test. While he was meant to read out and translate the questions, Aziz claimed that Mansueto would frequently ask him to guide particular candidates, who had been flagged for special treatment either by the ministries or the Office of the Prime Minister itself, to the correct answer.
