SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - One of the first trials in Chatham County’s new Gadsden courthouse is underway.
It’s a civil case that stems from the August 2017 murder of Eliud Montoya in Garden City.
Three men, Pablo Rangel-Rubio, Juan Rangel-Rubio, and Higinio Perez-Bravo are currently serving prison sentences for what prosecutors call a murder-for-hire plot.
The Department of Justice says the men killed Montoya after he found out they were hiring undocumented workers and taking money from their paychecks while working for Wolf Tree, Inc.
In the civil case, Montoya’s family is suing Davey Tree Expert Company, Wolf Tree’s parent company, for what they believe is the company’s role in Montoya’s death.
Tuesday was the first day of witness testimony. The trial is expected to last through the week.
In 2023, Davey Tree Expert Company reached a settlement with the DOJ to resolve claims over the hiring practices that allowed the scheme to happen.
