WARREN — Commissioners voted to approve a conciliator finding in a contract between the county and the Trumbull County jail correction officer union that will reduce the amount the county will pay for mandatory overtime and establish new pay scales for the officers.
Commissioners did not have a choice, but to approve the conciliator findings, as it was the final step in contract negotiations between the county and the Ohio Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association, which represents the officers and the sheriff’s office.
Jeffrey A. Belkin, the conciliator, ruled the county will be required to pay correction officers at a time and a half rate for the first and second mandatory overtime period given to them in a seven day period. On the third mandatory overtime, the county then will be required to pay double time.
The county’s previously paid corrections officers double time for all overtime assignments.
County officials expect the reduction in the per hour amount paid will provide significant savings to the sheriff budget.
“In the history of the department, there has not been many times, when COs have been mandated to work overtime three or more times,” Alexandra DeVangencie-Bush said.
Under the new contract, the wage scale for correction officers will be $22 per hour for new employees; $23.90 after two years; $24.61 after five years; $25.50 after 10 years and $26.32 after 15 years.
