Former President Donald Trump formally pleaded not guilty Thursday to the charges against him in Fulton County, Georgia, for trying to overturn the state’s 2020 election, meaning he will not appear at a scheduled arraignment on September 6 as he continues to protest his indictment.

Trump submitted a court filing entering his not guilty plea, which states he “fully understand[s] the nature of the offenses charged” and “freely and voluntarily waive[s] my right to be present at my arraignment.”
Trump and his 18 co-defendants were directed to appear in court on September 6 for the arraignment, after already surrendering to authorities in Fulton County and being released on bond.
Several other defendants in the Fulton County case had also pleaded not guilty prior to Trump’s filing, including far-right attorney Sidney Powell.
The former president was widely expected to plead not guilty to the charges against him, as he has openly opposed the charges and decried the indictment as a partisan “witch hunt” designed to hurt his 2024 presidential campaign.
This will be the first of Trump’s four indictments in which he has not been arraigned in person, though he waived his appearance at an arraignment when federal prosecutors added more charges to his indictment for retaining White House documents.
