Donald Trump rescinded an endorsement for Alabama Senate candidate Mo Brooks, saying the congressman had moved on from pushing claims about a stolen 2020 presidential election.
“Mo Brooks of Alabama made a horrible mistake recently when he went ‘woke’ and stated, referring to the 2020 Presidential Election Scam, ‘Put that behind you, put that behind you,’” the former president said in a statement Wednesday.
Mr. Brooks, despite having secured the endorsement months ago, is struggling in the GOP primary to succeed retiring Sen. Richard Shelby, as are some other candidates elsewhere in the country backed by Mr. Trump.
Mr. Brooks has been vocal in amplifying false claims about the election and appeared at the Jan. 6 “Stop the Steal” rally that preceded the riot at the Capitol. But he drew boos at a rally in August for saying the focus should be winning in the midterm elections and the next presidential contest.
“Very sad but, since he decided to go in another direction, so have I,” Mr. Trump wrote in the statement Wednesday. He had offered his “complete and total endorsement” of Mr. Brooks in April 2021.
In a statement, Mr. Brooks said he is “still the most conservative candidate” in the race and suggested Mr. Trump had been manipulated by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.) into dropping his endorsement.
