Tzuyang denies claims she is Chinese or backed by Chinese capital - The Korea Times

YouTuber Tzuyang has pushed back against a wave of false online claims, rejecting rumors that she is Chinese or supported by Chinese capital behind her channel’s 12.7 million subscribers.

The popular mukbang creator appeared on comedian Park Na-rae’s YouTube show Naraesik in an episode released Wednesday, where the two discussed the spread of misinformation targeting public figures.

Tzuyang, who recently testified at a National Assembly audit to call for stronger action against cyber defamation, said she had reached a breaking point.

“Because my work depends on public interest, I thought I had to accept some criticism,” she said. “But as things crossed a line, I wondered whether I should really have to endure false accusations and being framed. That is when I decided to confront it.”

She recalled being overwhelmed during her testimony. “I was so nervous that I don’t even remember what I said,” she said. “But the video was filled with comments saying I was pretending to be innocent. That hurt.”

Asked by Park about the most absurd rumor she had seen, Tzuyang pointed to repeated claims that her rapid growth was the result of Chinese political or financial backing. “People say my 12 million subscribers are all because of Chinese support, that Chinese groups are sponsoring me, and that I’m actually Chinese,” she said.

She also rejected another rumor about her education. “People keep saying I graduated from Sogang University’s continuing education program, but that is not true....
