‘Unimaginable things’: Whistleblowers lift lid on cosmetic surgery underbelly - The Sydney Morning Herald

“My concern was that if I didn’t speak up about what these doctors were doing that someone would die.”

These are some of the chilling words written by nurse-turned-whistleblower Justin Nixon to a parliamentary inquiry into the national regulator of health practitioners, AHPRA.

The names of the doctors and practices have been redacted by the parliamentary inquiry, but Nixon’s message is clear: cosmetic surgery is a booming industry, but it’s barely regulated and state and federal governments need to stop dithering and fix a mess that is maiming and destroying the lives of far too many people.

Nixon’s submission is gob smacking. He rattles off a series of claims including nurses conducting liposuction on unconscious patients, surveillance akin to the Big Brother House, procedures conducted in questionable facilities, the use of expired medications, inaccurate paperwork, unethical pricing.

Nixon says after he quit the practice he received a call that he believed was designed to scare him into silence. “Who knows what he could do … All I’m saying is he is a dangerous man,” Nixon recalls being told by a senior representative of the clinic.” When I asked what do you mean by that? It was reiterated that ‘he is a dangerous man who knows a lot of people’.”
