U.S. Attorney Ihlenfeld visits Martinsburg Rotary, talks threats and targets in West Virginia - Martinsburg Journal
MARTINSBURG — U.S. Attorney William Ihlenfeld III, of the Northern District of West Virginia, addressed the Rotary Club of Martinsburg on Thursday.
A former Rotarian himself, Ihlenfeld has prosecuted financial crimes, drug cartels, public corruption, money laundering, terrorism and the recent espionage case involving a U.S. Navy engineer and his wife arrested in Jefferson County last year and to be sentenced in August in federal court in Martinsburg.
The area that Ihlenfeld oversees includes offices in Wheeling, Martinsburg, Clarksburg and Elkins. He oversees a staff of 53 employees, including 24 attorneys and 28 non-attorney support personnel.
With the several offices, he said that Martinsburg is the fastest growing in the district and in the state.
“There is a lot of work to be done here; our office is bursting at the seams. We really have run out of space in the federal building, and we need to expand our space and eventually we will,” he said.
Ihlenfeld has been honored by the Drug Enforcement Administration, the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy and the FBI Citizens Academy for his efforts to address substance abuse.
At the Martinsburg Rotary meeting on Thursday, he discussed major threats and targets in West Virginia, which included fentanyl, COVID relief fraud, elder financial abuse, health care fraud, domestic terrorism and environmental justice.
