U.S. Labor Department: Cincinnati pizza restaurants fined $30,000 over child labor violations - WLWT Cincinnati

CINCINNATI —

The U.S. Department of Labor has fined two Greater Cincinnati pizza restaurants a combined $30,000 over child labor violations, the department announced Wednesday.

The department said they have also recovered just under $12,000 in back overtime wages and damages.

Officials say in May 2022, the department's Wage and Hour Division investigated Mio's Pizza locations in Cincinnati and Milford and found that the owners, Dan and Leslie Igo, violated several provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Authorities say at the Cincinnati location, operated by Stuff It LCC; they found that 12 minors under the age of 16 were illegally allowed to use manual fryers, operate gas ovens with an open flame, move pizza in and out of a broiler/conveyor oven and operate a mechanical dough puller and sheeter, all of which violate federal hazardous orders for minors.

Officials say 16 minors were assigned to work in violation of hours work standards and say one manager denied required overtime wages by improperly claiming they were a salaried manager and exempt from overtime.

At the Milford location, operated by Black Cat Pizzeria Inc., according to officials, nine minors - all under the age of 16 - were performing the same hazardous cooking and baking operations, 20 minors were working in violation of federal limits for work hours, and one manager owed back wages due to incorrectly claiming a similar overtime exemption for managers....
