Venezuela on Sunday accused neighbouring Trinidad and Tobago, in coordination with the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), of orchestrating a 'military provocation' aimed at triggering a full-scale confrontation with Caracas. The accusation came as a US warship docked in Trinidad and Tobago’s capital Port of Spain, signalling Washington’s latest show of force in the region.
Vice President Delcy Rodrguez said Venezuelan security forces had “captured a group of mercenaries” allegedly carrying “direct information from the American intelligence agency” and tasked with executing a “false flag” attack in the Caribbean.
“A false flag attack is underway in waters bordering Trinidad and Tobago or from Trinidadian or Venezuelan territory to generate a full military confrontation with our country,” Rodrguez said in an official statement. No evidence or further details were provided to substantiate the claim.
The Venezuelan government described the ongoing joint military exercises between the US and Trinidad and Tobago as a “serious threat” to the Caribbean region and a “hostile provocation” toward the South American nation.
