Virgin Mary did not live in Volta Region – GMMB apologises over false claim - GhanaWeb

The Ghana Museums and Monuments Board (GMMB) has issued a formal apology to Professor Wazi Apoh, Dean of the School of Arts and Professor of Archaeology at the University of Ghana, following the circulation of a false claim wrongly attributed to him at the Ho Regional Museum.

The apology follows reports indicating his dismissed of viral claims suggesting that Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ, lived in Ghana's Volta Region for 40 years.

The incident gained attention after a viral video featuring Ghanaian vlogger Goshers and his Zambian companion Lilian Chipeso showed a tour guide alleging that the Virgin Mary migrated to Ghana and lived in the Volta Region for 40 years after the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

In a statement dated April 30, 2026, the GMMB clarified that the claim was made by a security officer who had taken on the role of a tour guide at the museum, and not by Prof Apoh as widely suggested.

The Board stressed that the assertion attributed to the academic is entirely false and has no basis in his work or public statements.

“The claim attributed to him is therefore unfounded and misleading,” the statement said.

It also stressed that Prof Apoh has never made such remarks in any academic or public forum.
