Farmers face a wide range of legal questions as they start, grow, and transition their operations.
On February 28, attendees at the ASAP Business of Farming Conference will have the chance to hear directly from Bill Durr, a litigation attorney, trusts and estates attorney Zac Lamb, and Avery Locklear, a labor and employment attorney, during the workshop “Legal Considerations for Farms.”
Drawing from real-world experience working with agricultural clients across North Carolina, the Ward and Smith team will walk through the legal issues farmers most often encounter. The session will cover practical guidance on choosing and structuring a farm business, navigating labor and employment requirements, and understanding how to reduce the risk of disputes—and what to do when conflicts cannot be resolved informally.
The presentation will also address legal considerations unique to agriculture, including farming on leased land and planning for the future through estate planning and succession strategies. Whether participants are new farmers or managing multigenerational operations, the workshop is designed to provide clear, usable information that supports long-term stability.
Ward and Smith is proud to both sponsor the 2026 Business of Farming Conference and contribute legal insight that helps strengthen farm businesses and rural communities.
