Warren, Washington counties warn of visits by bogus election officials - Times Union

ALBANY — Election officials in Warren and Washington counties are asking residents to be on the lookout for imposters making false claims of improper voter registration.

In a joint news release, election officials in those counties said that recent incidents of this kind have been reported in a number of locations around the state, including Warren and Washington counties.

A woman who recently moved to Warren County was confronted Sunday by two women falsely claiming to be from the Washington County Board of Elections who told her she had illegally registered to vote there. But her registration was legal.

The two women “carried identification cards. They presented the resident with a blank NY State election complaint form, leaving her shaken,” the release noted.

Sheriffs’ offices in both counties have been notified. Warren County’s election commissioners told the Times Union that the bogus officials didn’t appear to be targeting voters registered in any specific party, though the visitors seemed to be working from some kind of list.

The counties added that real board of elections staff do not visit homes or voters in person, and only conduct outreach to voters at their county offices or via telephone, email or the U.S. Postal Service.

“Anyone who is visited by someone questioning their voter registration should look at any identification they offer but not interact any further with the visitor,” the release said. “It would be very helpful to have descriptions and license...
