Washington Man Pleads Guilty to Insurance Fraud for Carpet-Cleaning Claim - Insurance Journal

A carpet-cleaning claim and a fake theft of a Hyundai has led to guilty pleas for two people for insurance fraud in Washington.

Seattle resident Jason Weisfeld of Federal Way, Washington, and Fedaa Shakir, both pleaded guilty to submitting false insurance claims.

Weisfeld filed a false insurance claim relating to a carpet cleaning incident that resulted in an investigation by the Washington State Insurance Commissioners’ Investigations Unit.

In August of 2022, Weisfeld filed a claim with Farmers Insurance, asserting that an Oxi Fresh employee damaged his wall as well as a painting while cleaning. He then reportedly forged a rough estimate of the repairs of the alleged damage as well as fake photos.

Farmers Insurance conducted an investigation and declared the documentation was forged, resulting in a denied claim of $4,487.98. The matter was then referred to CIU.

Weisfeld was charged with a gross misdemeanor and sentenced to 80 hours of community service and 24 months of probation, and was ordered to pay a $500 court fee.

Shakir filed a false theft claim with Esurance for his 2018 Hyundai Sonata. In January 2023, Shakir filed a theft claim with Esurance, reporting that his 2018 Hyundai Sonata was damaged due to attempted theft. The claims were later denied by Esurance because the damages were already reported in 2022. The $7,643 claim was rejected and referred to CIU.

Shakir was charged with submitting false claims and proof and sentenced to 80 hours of community service...
