SEWICKLEY, Pa. —
A federal lawsuit accuses Heritage Valley Health System and staff members of enabling alleged crimes by emergency department nurse Nolan Chismire, including drug theft, false insurance claims, and failures in patient care allegedly linked to two deaths.

The 78-page lawsuit, filed under the False Claims Act, claims Chismire submitted false health insurance claims for medications never administered to patients, stole controlled substances from the hospital for personal use over eight years, worked shifts under the influence of drugs to the extent he was unable to provide proper care, and diverted morphine from pain patients.
The lawsuit also details two deaths allegedly linked to Chismire’s actions.
It states that in late 2024, a 70-year-old woman arrived at the emergency department with a non-life-threatening condition. Chismire allegedly failed to provide care for hours and made a medication error that led to her death.
In another case, the lawsuit alleges Chismire failed to care for a 47-year-old man experiencing alcohol withdrawal. The man became frustrated and left the emergency department, but minutes later, he was found with a head wound in the parking lot.
Staff reportedly dragged him back into the hospital before transferring him to Allegheny General Hospital, where he died.
