Falsified drug checks, inconsistent ambulance restocking and medical mismanagement at stations are among the allegations against the ACT Ambulance Service that are now under investigation.
Opposition Leader Mark Parton aired the allegations during a recent Question Time after a concerned ACTAS staff member contacted the Canberra Liberals.
He asked Police, Fire and Emergency Services Minister Dr Marisa Paterson whether she was aware of these complaints and whether ACTAS had formally recorded any medication or drug-check discrepancies in the past 12 months.
“I’m quite distressed about these questions,” she responded.
“[ACTAS staff follow] best practice and they absolutely take their handling of medications and patient safety incredibly serious[ly].
“If the Canberra Liberals have evidence of allegations they would like to present to me, I would be grateful … so I can follow up.”
Region has seen the correspondence from the ACTAS staff member.
The anonymous person stated they were writing out of “genuine concern” for patient safety, staff wellbeing and the integrity of care being delivered by the service.
“I have deliberated at length before putting these concerns into writing, but I believe the issues … are serious enough that they can no longer go unaddressed,” they wrote.
“Issues raised internally seem to be falling on deaf ears. There are systemic issues that are placing patients, and staff, at unacceptable risk.”
