Whistleblower bill necessary to protect workers, says Tory MSP - The Times

An independent whistleblowers’ office must be established to protect workers, investigate complaints and rule on compensation claims, an MSP has said.

Stephen Kerr, the Scottish Tory chief whip, wants a watchdog that would be answerable to Holyrood.

He announced his intention to introduce a bill to create an agency after NHS Highland had to apologise and pay millions in compensation.

An investigation was triggered after four whistleblowers, who were medical professionals, claimed a culture of bullying had existed within the health board for a decade.

Writing in The Times Kerr, who represents Central Scotland, claimed that those people taking risks to expose injustice deserved greater protection.

“So long as whistleblowers are silenced, ignored or retaliated against, we will fail to hold companies, agencies and government
