A whistleblowing paramedic has branded the current situation in the East of England Ambulance service 'unsustainable', warning of potential collapse if something is not done quickly. She said fatigue was so bad that she once had to punch her colleague to stop them falling asleep at the wheel and outlined long days without breaks, which have caused her concern when it comes to treating patients.
During an interview with BBC Radio Cambridgeshire, she said the current service is "unsustainable" and that response times are mostly not being met. The hospital trust has had five consecutive Care Quality Commission reports stating it "requires improvement", with concerns for the health of both staff and patients.
The whistleblower said: "It's hard to sum it up in a very short sentence, but unsustainable is probably the most accurate description currently. Unsustainable work load, unsustainable mental health stuff, the way we're being treated, the way the public are treating us, the way we are having to work at the moment - times, no meal breaks, stress, complaints, bullying.... It's not sustainable for anyone. "

She went on to explain a culture of 'bullying' within the Trust, which has been addressed previously by the Trust. The boss who took over last year vowed to end the culture of sexual harassment and bullying.
