FORT MILL — A former Silfab Solar employee said he was the one who alerted authorities in June about workplace violations at the Fort Mill plant under construction.
In a lawsuit filed July 29, that former employee said he was fired weeks later.
“Silfab is currently reviewing the allegations and denies that the former employee’s termination was based on any reports he may have made and we plan to vigorously defend the suit,” the company said in a statement on July 30.
York County inspectors on June 23 issued a stop work order upon determining there were unauthorized personnel at the Silfab plant at 7149 Logistics Lane.
"(Inspectors) discovered Silfab employees there who are not involved in the ongoing permitted construction," York County officials said. "That is a violation because the company does not have a certificate of occupancy for the building."
In the review, inspectors said employees were working in a building with access partially blocked and no working “exit” signs, according to York County documents. Fire alarms and a sprinkler system also had not been added to the building at that time, officials said.
The county lifted the stop order on June 27. In their statement, Silfab officials said the solar panel manufacturer “worked cooperatively with local officials to promptly address and satisfy concerns raised.“
