Whistleblower Hotline: Audubon residents rally against potential mining project - Valley News Live

AUDUBON, M.N. (Valley News Live) - A gravel mining project in Audubon could take place near the homes of some residents, which some residents are not happy about.

“They want to mine gravel 100 feet from these folks’ patio, their home,” said Jeff Zetlinger, a local resident.

One of the ideas behind the mining project would be to provide materials for roads on the property. However, some residents feel that it would bring unnecessary noise and distraction right outside of where they live.

“People came out here to live out in the country, and they’re trying to tell us that there isn’t going to be any noise with a sand and gravel pit crushing rocks and everything. That’s absolutely not accurate,” said Loren Kersting, a local resident.

Prairie Lake Investments was the business that filled out an application to start the project on Heimark Avenue. They say, “Dust control will be applied on Heimark Avenue to limit dust from the mine traffic.”

“They say a temporary permit and they’re asking for five days a week, for 11 hours a day, for five years or more. I find that hard to believe,” said Zetlinger.

For one resident, he said he heard of the proposal on short notice.

“That’s the weekend before Memorial Day. Two or three days later, I mean, not giving anyone a chance to say anything. So, that’s how quick it was,” said Bennett Jendro, a local resident.
