FARGO, N.D. (Valley News Live) - 39 storage units are planned to be built just off of Pelican Lake in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. It would take up 10 acres of land outside of the lake. It’s ignited many local residents to speak up and push back against the move.
“It’s right on the road. If it was in a cornfield a mile away, I don’t think anybody would care, but it falls within the shoreline ordinance because it’s close to the lake,” said Chris Hampson, a resident who lives along Pelican Lake who started a petition.
Hampson isn’t the only person who feels this way. Other people have joined in signing the petition against the proposed plan to build the storage units. Some people believe that if storage units get built by the lake, it won’t do any good for the environment.
“I believe there should be an environmental impact statement done. It’s a swamp surrounding it and a big lake,” said Pam Johnson, a Detroit Lakes resident.
“The way that we feel about this space is that it’s a residential neighborhood. If you would think of it, there are 800 residual houses in a residential neighborhood. We know each other’s grandparents and we know each other’s grandchildren. It’s a community of people! The development that is going on is not really in keeping of the residential community that we have,” said Sherry Trepp, a local resident.
Whether or not this proposed plan gets approved, it’ll be decided by the Otter Tail County Commission. A Minnesota House representative will decide too.
